Next.....drill holes for the T-Nuts, glass those in, then pop the mold for construction! Also, I can now pop the mold for the subwoofer box and trim that up, and start construction on that badboy!!
Parents brought me a bunch of stuff from the old house I lived in back in high school...dug deep and found some fiberglass mat.....the same roll I started using when I was teaching myself fiberglass....blast from the past for sure!!! So I threw two layers on and let them dry overnight.

Went to the hardware store to grab some goodies.....tape, wooden dowels and metal rods.
A few layers later, we are ready to pop out the mold....tomorrow anyways....starting to get cold and need to let that puppy sit overnight. Also, started on the doors....get everything taped up, marked up, and one layer of glass down on that. Didn't have much time last night with the emergency install that I had to go mobile and get done.
Got 2 layers of 1.5oz mat down....all bubbles rolled out and now she's ready for some 3 oz mat. tapped off the doors and was ready to start on them as well...but....FAIL.....ran out of masking tape, so tomorrow I will start on the doors. Cheers So ya, like the title says.....blood, sweat and tears we're put into the Evo tonight.................as much as could be dripped on it in 5 minutes! That's all the time I had to work on it....lame.. Oh well, she's finally ready for some glass!
Cheers So, got the trunk taped off and ready for some resin, but I need more supplies. Tin Foil is on top of the list, then we'll be ready to go!!!
Also, started thinking about the other parts of the car that are fiberglass (door panels) and so I attempted to tap those off...well, I need wax and adhesive remover, as SOMEONE has been Armor-All'ing their doors, so tap won't stick. So tomorrow I'll run to the store and pick up the necessary cooking supplies to start glass!! Cheers Finished up the front passengers door with even more sound deadening.....so that means, for now...I'm finally done with this stuff! Woot Woot!
Also, pulled the dash, cause I know the owner is getting a little antsy over there in Dirka Land to see his dash removed.....so there....removed! Good thing, I can now steal up to 3 babies and hide them in this dash!! There is a BUNCH of room behind that Rockford radio! Had a bit of time to work on the Evo tonight.
Finished up the rear for now. Put some deadening on the rear wheel well. It's covered by the seat, so it muffles the sound, but you can tell it's a weak spot when you're driving without the rear seats; so I put just enough to quite down the wheels. Started on the drivers door as well. Pulled the panel and all the stock sound deadening and water proofer off. Lined the inside (outside) door panel, ran some 12 ga speaker wire through the stock loom (always a joy), made a few ABS panels to cover the big openings, then covered everything with sound deadening again. It's a loooooong process, but someone's gotta do it...and in the end, it will sound amazing in there!! Finished up the rear door installs today.
Got the speakers mounted, secured and sound deadened/sealed. Vented properly through the door card so no sound waves are lost. Everything fits as if nothing was done...and it looks that way too....except when you knock on the outside door panel...then you can tell something was done....SOLID! Finished up the sound deadening on the rear doors
Ran new speaker wire in through the boots and made them look like they were supposed to be there. Fabricated some new 1" speaker spacers out of wood. After cutting them, I pre-drilled holes for mounting the speakers as well as the spacers to the doors. Now they are in a resin bath overnight, so they become stronger and won't crack over time. Got some new shoes and socks for the Evo.
Since these were special order, I had to call my rim/tire guy and have him order them in. Well, dropped the Evo off, came and picked it up, and they ordered the wrong rims. Owner wanted the 6 spoke Tenzo's, but they got the 10 spoke rims. Before we decided to do this, the owner didn't know if he wanted 6 or 10....so MAYBE he'll like these as much as I do. I told the rim guy to go ahead and keep them on, and if Owner doesn't like it, to order another set. On the way home I recieved 6 thumbs up, and 2 'window roll down' Hey, nice rims! So I think they look great on the car, and so does everyone else. Also got some brand newbie winter tires for the stock rims. Now he can roll in the summer and winter!! Another long night...well not too long, but another long time spent applying sound deadener.
Got the trunk and trunk lid 100% complete. Disassembled the rear seat and deck cover (for yes, you guessed it, more deadener). Started on the rear doors, as these will be the easiest part of the build. Deadening the doors and installing the speakers...nothing special with the rears! Took everything apart, removed stock water lining and 'sound deadener' (if you can call it that). Rockford Fosgate stock systems have actually impressed me so far. The woofers are never in a 'hidden box' they are out in the open, with plenty of air space (never said they sounded good) and the speaker materials were just like any other after market product....looked like they would last! Got the inside of the outside sheet metal all done, now making an ABS plug/cap to fill the giant hole, then on to making this thing rattle proof and basically turning it into a subwoofer box on a hinge. That way Kip will get really good midbass out of the rear speakers. Cheers Even though I spent 2 hours stuffed inside the trunk, it still doesn't look like I got much done. But, I did. Entire right side of the trunk is good to go. There is alot of double walls, and covering front and back of them, even places I can't see....takes alot out of ya!
Oh well, sound deadening is the worse job to do, but in the end, it's all worth it!! Oh, and as you can see, my shop foreman didn't help much!! So work has finally begun!! Owner will be pleased!
Was a busy day today. Got his new drifting rims with high performance proxy TR5 summer tires ordered; and since he's going to be in snow this winter, I also got him some high performance winter tires to go on his stock rims. Tore apart the back trunk area to figure out the layout of the subs/amps back there. Have a few concept ideas that I sent to the owner, so we'll see if he likes them. Also started some removal and sound deadening. Only in the trunk, but that's the largest area. This trunk is kind of funky, so it's going to take a little longer than usually. Got about 75% done in the trunk last night.....not bad for an hours work. Keep posted! All products ordered and shipped for Project NetherSolsti.
Halo CCFL Angel Eyes arrived, now just waiting on new headlights and projector parts. Everything should be here by the 20th. So install will start Thursday or Friday. Going to knock this one out relatively fast, as Project EVO is sitting in the shop for the first time in a few months. Will start removing panels and doing the first round of Fiberglass this week as well. No rest for the wicked! The last of the products for round 1 of Project Evo arrived today.
Escorts 9500 ci This thing is bad... GPS tracking Front Radar Reciever Front Laser Recievers and Shifters Rear Laser Recievers and Shifters Mini Controller Module Mini Display Module Bi-Color LED alerts Safety Camera Data Base I'm excited to put this in a give it a test run :) So I guess all I needed to do was actually open the door to the Evo last night to get some ideas rolling again. I've been so busy lately that I haven't even had time to think about Project Evo....just see it everyday I head off to work...that's about it. So last night, I poked my head inside the cabin for about 30 seconds and BOOM.....I already had ideas that needed to go on paper and other ideas to work out in my mind. Custom fiberglass door pods; front and back, with backlit LED/Plexi windows showing off brands and logos. That's about as far as I got, but the trunk is a whole other monster. I know what needs to be done, just need to figure out where to put everything...small trunk, too many stock access panels, and not enough room to put everything....we'll figure it out. Stay tuned for more updates!
My canvas: Front Doors Rear Doors Started planning Project Evo tonight. Figured out a few locations for the amps, layout in the trunk and areas where all the gadgets and gizmo's will go. Trying to stuff a DVD player with nagivation, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, and iPod hookups into a dash and throughout the car. Plus the addition of all the components for the high-end radar detector. Also, the amps and everything need a home in the rear! I think some metal is going to be in order!
Everything for project Evo has arrived. All the fiberglass material, wires, DVD player with navigation, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, backup camera. 1000 watt amp, 400 watt 4 channel amp, 12" crazy subwoofer, sound deadening to make sure nothing rattles. This is going to be a gnarly build; now that everything is here, guess I should be working and not typing!
Got a sweet JVC touchscreen DVD player for Matt in the mail today. Now in his Chevy he'll have DVD playback, Radio, CD, iPod and access to multiple different add-ons down the road! Everything is ordered and on it's way for phase one of Project Evo.
Alpine DVD player with built in Navigation, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, and Backup Camera. Arc Audio Front and Rear Component Speakers all being powered by an Arc Audio KS 4 channel amp. Arc Audio Flatline 12" woofer being pushed by an Arc Audio 1000 watt mono amp. Plenty of fiberglass on it's way as well as all the cables and misc parts to put this thing together. Should be a good sounding system to compliment the fast car. |
